Of course, once you’re growing a kid, you would like to make sure that you’re doing all you can to give your child the very best start. We have got some tricks for making a brighter, happier baby.
Were you aware, when you’re pregnant, your daily diet, feelings and the way you interact with your bump all play a part in developing your growing infant’s brain.
‘Inherited genes play an important part in determining intelligence and personality, but also the right lifestyle choices can help ensure those genes are programmed in the uterus,’ says Dr Lana Asprey. In fact, ‘scientists estimate that only 50 per cent of IQ is down to genes — that the remainder is affected by means of a baby’s surroundings’ So what are you waiting for? Make sure your baby inherits your braininess, now.
1. Begin a storytime habit
The foundations for language start in the uterus and, from the third trimester, your baby might memorise noises she hears regularly. ‘US researchers asked mothers to see The Cat In The Hat repeatedly for their unborn infants. After the birth, the babies “chose” the recording of their mommy reading the narrative by sucking on at a specific rate to activate the recording,’ says parenting expert Dr Miriam Stoppard.
2. Remain active
Enjoy the endorphin boost you get from exercise? Well, so does your baby. Hormones released during workout cross over the placenta, bathing your baby in feel-good compounds for up to eight hours. Plus, as exercise increases the flow of blood around your body, such as to the womb, your child’s growth is provided a boost.
The most recent study also indicates exercise while pregnant can raise neurons within your child’s hippocampus — the learning and memory component of the brain — by 40 per cent.
3. Get just a small sun
Never has sunlight vitamin, Vitamin D, been so important. And you simply need to soak it up for 20 minutes per day. ‘We test all the pregnant mums who visit our clinic because of vitamin D, and 70 percent are deficient,’ says fertility specialist Zita West. ‘That is because of a mixture of a lack of sunshine and not getting enough vitamin D in their diet’
This nutrient is vital for helping your baby develop strong bones and heart, and researchers have also started investigating a connection between a lack of vitamin D in elderly women and atherosclerosis.
4. Massage your bump
From around 20 weeks, your baby will feel you touching your bulge and yanking it may send messages that are calming into her nervous system. Research suggests that an unborn baby can even differentiate between her mother and father’s signature. Pass the almond oil. This is the very best excuse for a massage.
5. Speak to your baby

Maybe the most essential instruction of all you can shape your baby’s music taste. ‘Unborn babies adore music — it will help trigger happy chemicals, such as serotonin, which inspire her to become calm and contented,’ says Miriam. ‘Following the birth, your baby recalls and relives those good feelings linked to the music every time she hears it’
8. Start singing nursery rhymes
Yep, you can get into this habit now. ‘We understand unborn babies could pick up the rise and drop and cadences in language,’ says Miriam. ‘You can assist your infant tune from singing rhythmic tunes — nursery rhymes are ideal.’ After your baby’s born, then sing exactly the same rhymes to quieten and soothe her.
